What is an EMDR intensive?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach used to address distress associated with traumatic and other difficult life experiences. Intensive EMDR sessions provide longer periods of therapeutic time, allowing assessment, preparation, processing, and reflection to be planned in a more concentrated format.
An intensive is not a promise of faster recovery or a requirement to revisit every difficult memory. Treatment is paced collaboratively, with attention to safety, readiness, and your goals.
When more dedicated time may help.
Trauma & difficult experiences
For people exploring the impact of distressing events, persistent triggers, or experiences that continue to feel unresolved.
Established therapy goals
For those who have identified a focused area of work and would value a dedicated treatment window.
Scheduling considerations
For people whose schedules make regular weekly appointments difficult, provided an intensive format is clinically appropriate.
EMDR intensives are not appropriate for everyone. Readiness, stabilization needs, dissociation, current risk, available supports, and other factors are considered during assessment.
Thoughtful care before, during, and after.
The intensive is part of a broader treatment plan—not simply a longer appointment.
We review your history, current concerns, goals, coping resources, and suitability for an intensive. A preparatory workbook helps guide the discussion.
One to three days of planned EMDR-focused treatment, with breaks and pacing adapted to clinical needs. Sessions are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
We discuss how to care for yourself after the intensive, what you noticed, and whether follow-up support or additional treatment may be helpful.
Planning your intensive.
Initial assessment
90-minute assessment and preparatory workbook review.
One-day intensive
One scheduled intensive day, 10:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with appropriate breaks.
Two or three days
Multi-day treatment may be considered following assessment and collaborative planning.
Fees are in Canadian dollars. Assessment is separate from intensive-day fees. Insurance reimbursement depends on your individual plan; please verify coverage directly with your insurer. An assessment does not guarantee that intensive treatment will be recommended.
Questions you may be holding.
Choosing an intensive is a personal decision. We welcome questions about the process and whether this format may fit your needs.
Do I need to be an existing Théla client?
Not necessarily. An initial assessment is required to understand your needs, readiness, and whether this format is appropriate.
How many days will I need?
One-, two-, and three-day options are available. The appropriate duration depends on your goals and clinical assessment; more days are not automatically better.
Will I process trauma for the entire day?
No. An intensive includes preparation, check-ins, breaks, and integration as clinically appropriate. Pacing is collaborative.
Is EMDR intensive therapy suitable for everyone?
No. Some people benefit more from ongoing stabilization, other approaches, or shorter sessions. Suitability is considered individually.
Does insurance cover EMDR intensives?
Coverage varies by insurer and policy. Théla cannot guarantee reimbursement; please check your plan before booking.
