Therapy in the Language You Think In

For many Chinese-speaking clients, the hardest part of therapy is not the therapy itself. It is finding a therapist who can hold a conversation about grief, anxiety, or family pressure in the language that conversation actually happened in.

At Théla Psychotherapy Clinic, sessions are offered in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Bonny Kaman Li, MA, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO Reg. #18875, delivers Mandarin and Cantonese sessions herself. This is not interpretation and it is not a referral to a language line. It is clinical work conducted directly in the language a client is most comfortable using.

Why Language Changes What Gets Said

Emotion does not always translate cleanly. A client who is fluent in English can still find that certain feelings, especially the ones tied to family, shame, or grief, surface more honestly in Mandarin or Cantonese. Some clients switch between languages mid-sentence without noticing. Others have never had the chance to describe their inner life in their first language to a clinician at all.

Working in a client's first language removes a layer of translation between feeling and speech. It also removes the quiet fatigue of constantly converting one's own experience into a second language before it can even be discussed.

Care That Understands the Culture, Not Just the Language

Bonny brings more than fluency to this work. Before training as a psychotherapist, she spent over 15 years in the legal field, much of it working directly with immigrants, newcomers, and marginalized communities navigating unfamiliar systems. In 2022, she received the Ontario Attorney General's Victim Services Award of Distinction for that work.

That background shapes how she practices. She understands intergenerational conflict, filial obligation, the pressure to maintain face, and the particular quiet that can follow a hard conversation with a parent. These are not concepts she learned from a textbook. They inform how she listens.
