WELCOME TO THÉLA

Support that honours your experience.

Seeking support can be difficult, particularly when navigating displacement, uncertainty, trauma, family changes, or adjustment to life in Canada. Therapy can offer space to explore what you are experiencing and build practical strategies at your own pace.

Bonny offers individualized, trauma-informed psychotherapy informed by approaches including EMDR, IFS, EFT, DBT and somatic work. The approach and timing are collaboratively determined based on your needs and readiness.

BEYOND THE THERAPY ROOM

A perspective shaped by law, advocacy, and psychotherapy.

Before entering the psychotherapy profession, Bonny spent approximately 10 years working in litigation, including refugee and immigration law, and three years teaching refugee and immigration law.

Her experience also includes mentoring new and aspiring regulated immigration consultants, paralegals, and immigration lawyers, as well as conducting mock refugee hearings and providing individualized feedback to help claimants prepare for their proceedings.

Through this work, Bonny developed a deeper understanding of the legal, systemic, and emotional challenges that may accompany displacement, migration, and the refugee determination process—including uncertainty while awaiting decisions, the demands of recounting difficult experiences, and navigating unfamiliar systems.

Today, as a psychotherapist and recognized Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provider, she brings this interdisciplinary perspective to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and individualized mental health care.

Professional boundaries: Psychotherapy is separate from legal representation. Bonny does not provide legal advice or refugee hearing preparation as part of psychotherapy.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Three steps toward care.

01 · Book a consultation

Choose Bonny in Théla's online booking system. Let us know you would like to explore IFHP coverage.

02 · Ask your physician or NP

Bring our printable referral-letter template to your physician or nurse practitioner. They can document the diagnosis and recommend psychotherapy.

03 · Confirm authorization

Théla will review eligibility and applicable co-payment information, and arrange the required prior approval process before covered treatment begins.

Important: A consultation booking does not confirm IFHP coverage or authorization. Coverage depends on current eligibility, the applicable benefit rules, and Medavie Blue Cross approval. Confirm any consultation fee or co-payment with Théla before attending.

FOR YOUR PHYSICIAN OR NURSE PRACTITIONER

A referral letter you can bring to your appointment.

For IFHP psychotherapy prior approval, current Medavie Blue Cross guidance requires a letter from a physician or nurse practitioner indicating the diagnosis and prescription or recommendation for psychotherapy or counselling therapy, together with an initial assessment report prepared for the authorization request.

Download the printable Théla template and ask your physician or nurse practitioner to complete and sign it. This is a clinic-prepared aid, not an official government or insurer form.

COVERAGE & COSTS

Understanding IFHP coverage.

IFHP may contribute toward eligible psychotherapy services for qualifying beneficiaries. Since May 2026, supplemental mental health counselling benefits may require a client co-payment. Your coverage, any applicable costs, and prior approval must be checked before services begin.

Bring your IFHP eligibility document to your consultation and discuss coverage details with Théla. We will explain the next steps before scheduling covered treatment.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Questions you may have.

Can I book without a referral letter?

Yes, you can request a consultation directly with Bonny. The physician or nurse practitioner letter is needed for the IFHP psychotherapy authorization process, so covered treatment cannot be assumed before approval.

Does the physician have to use Théla's form?

No. Our template is intended to make it easier to request the information Medavie Blue Cross asks for. A clinician's own signed letter may also be appropriate if it includes the required information.

Is IFHP psychotherapy free?

Not necessarily. Supplemental benefits may involve a co-payment. Théla will review the current applicable rules and discuss costs before treatment.

Who applies for prior approval?

The registered psychotherapy provider coordinates the applicable Medavie Blue Cross prior-approval submission, including clinical assessment information. Your physician or nurse practitioner supplies the supporting recommendation letter.
