Emma is one of the therapy dogs at Théla Psychotherapy Clinic — a Bernese Mountain Dog who brings calm into a room simply by entering it. When appropriate, she may be part of in-person sessions to support grounding and emotional regulation.

Her role is quiet by design. Emma isn't there to perform or entertain — she's there to settle the space, offering a steady, safe presence that lets the real work happen.

A Little About Emma

A Bernese Mountain Dog with the heart of a gentle giant and the quiet confidence of someone who has absolutely been here before. She may take a moment to warm up when you first meet — but don't mistake her initial reserve for indifference. She's simply sizing up the situation, as any good herder would.

Once she warms up to you (and she almost always does), Emma will settle in close. Very close. Despite her considerable size, she is fully convinced she is a lapdog, and she will arrange herself accordingly. Her calm, grounding presence makes her a natural companion for those navigating PTSD, personality disorders, and anxiety — she has a way of making the room feel quieter just by being in it.

As your session wraps up, keep an eye on Emma. She'll slip away quietly and position herself beside the treat jar — not demanding, not dramatic, just waiting — with the patient dignity of someone who knows exactly what she deserves.

Off the clock, Emma's priorities are simple and non-negotiable: food, snow, wrestling matches with her sister Evee, and following her mom from room to room like a very large, very devoted shadow.

Emma’s Role in Therapy

When clinically appropriate, Emma may join select in-person sessions as part of an animal-assisted approach to care. For some clients, her presence offers something words can't always reach:

  • Grounding during emotionally intense moments
  • Nervous system calming
  • A greater sense of safety and steadiness in the room

Including Emma in sessions is always a collaborative decision — discussed in advance, never assumed.

What Sessions with Emma Are Like

Emma is not there to perform. She'll settle quietly into the space — resting nearby, present but undemanding — and let you set the pace entirely.

There is no expectation to interact with her. Some clients find that a gentle touch during a difficult moment helps them stay regulated. Others simply find comfort in knowing she's there. Both are completely valid.

Comfort, Choice, and Boundaries

Your comfort and sense of safety always come first.

Animal-assisted therapy at Théla is:

  • Optional and never assumed
  • Offered to adult clients only
  • Always discussed and agreed upon in advance
  • Flexible — it can be adjusted or discontinued at any time

Emma's wellbeing is monitored throughout the day. If she shows signs of fatigue, she steps out. If at any point you feel unsure or uncomfortable, sessions continue seamlessly without her.

Animal-assisted therapy isn't the right fit for everyone — including those with allergies, a fear of dogs, or a simple personal preference — and that is always fully respected.
